The Acolyte

The Acolyte is about two twins who were split up when they were young because their hometown burned down in a terrible accident. She joined the Jedi Order, but then she quit and became a meknek, which is an illegal independent mechanic. Mae, on the other hand, seems to have joined forces with a dark force that taught her how to use the Force.

Both of them didn’t know the other was still living, but they quickly find out when Mae goes on a killing spree as a Jedi and charges Osha with her crimes. Osha eventually meets up with her old master Sol, played by the great Lee Jung-jae, and the two of them start to look into Mae’s killing spree.

The people and world are more or less fully developed, and the idea is interesting, but it doesn’t really feel like it fits together well. I also can’t figure out why—everything is there, and I can’t think of anything that was clearly wrong—but it just doesn’t work.

They are like a teacher and a student, which is an interesting relationship, but I haven’t spent enough time with either character to care about their connection. Maybe everything Osha is going through would make more sense if we had seen a single show with her before she got sucked into all this nonsense. We didn’t, and it still doesn’t. It made everything seem a little boring.

The writing is stilted, uninspired, and predictable, and the conversation doesn’t help. However, the whole cast delivers a stunning performance, but we have to give extra credit to Lee Jung-jae as Sol and Manny Jacinto as Qimir, a supporting character who used to be a smuggler and helps Mae on her quest.

Review

Besides that, it looks great, with beautiful settings, great lighting, and outfit design that is better than anything else I’ve seen in the series. Also, fight scenes are shot clearly and with purpose, which is good in a show where Force-powered characters move all over the place.

But after playing Star Wars: The Acolyte for an hour and a half, I don’t feel much about it. There was time, I was there, and then it was over. It doesn’t happen often that I watch something and not feel anything, but The Acolyte did that. Though I might watch a few more shows, I doubt I’ll be able to stay interested for long if they’re anything like the first two.

The whole season of The Acolyte was a mess, and Tuesday night’s crazy season ending makes me even more sure that this show needed about three more drafts before it went into production. This show is rough and messy all the way through, and even the two very funny cameos in the end (which we’ll talk about below) can’t save it. There are spoilers ahead.

The Acolyte has quickly become one of the most controversial Star Wars shows on Disney Plus, right up there with The Last Jedi. Still, there is one easy question: Will there be a second season of The Acolyte? Yes or no?

I used to have mixed feelings about the show, but the last few episodes were great, and now I really like it. I’d like to see it continue, no matter what happens in the end. That doesn’t seem likely at all, though, based on what we know.

This isn’t about the show being woke or being slammed by Star Wars YouTubers and their fans. This is actually a pretty easy question: cost vs. viewership.

The Acolyte cost

People who know how much money think The Acolyte cost $180 million for eight thirty-minute shows. That’s a crazy amount of money for a Star Wars project that isn’t even close to being in theatres. Instead, it’s for the sixth Disney live-action Star Wars series. I like the way the show looks, but it doesn’t look like it cost $180 million to make, which makes you wonder where most of that money went.
