The Chief Justice of India tells doctors on strike to go back to work

Thursday, the Chief Justice of India told the doctors who were protesting against the brutal murder and rape of a trainee doctor in Kolkata that they should go back to work and that the hospitals would not punish them.

“Let them all go back to work. We’ll make a general order.” As soon as doctors go back to work, we will convince the officials not to do anything bad. If they don’t get back to work, how will the public administrative system work?” DY Chandrachud, the chief justice, said.

At the start of the meeting, the lawyer for the resident doctors of AIIMS Nagpur told the bench led by the Chief Justice of India that they were being mistreated because they were protesting the Kolkata rape-murder case. The lawyer for the resident doctors at PGI Chandigarh said that nurses’ unpaid time off was being taken away for the protests.
